Ancient Greek alchemist Zosimos described making arsenic in 300 AD. As the symptoms of arsenic poisoning were largely unknown during the time, the substance was frequently used as a murder weapon. Interestingly, in the Victorian era, a form of arsenic was mixed with vinegar and chalk and eaten by women to improve their complexions, making their skin paler.
